Why don't we reach out to people that are different than us? What happened to that old saying that people like people that are the opposite of them? We tend to stay in a comfort zone with people that are similar to us because it gives similar interests, it's easy to start conversation, and its easier to interact with. We often stick to being in cliques and never really reach out to or build relationships with people that are different. Brooks states, "People are moving into self-segregating communities with people like themselves, and building invisible and sometimes visible barriers to keep strangers out" (p.391). In middle school, high school, and even college, we tend to hang out/ talk to people that are similar to us. He mentions that our world is coming to a point where we are becoming more and more segmented from diversity.
